Low carb and keto diets have been shown to promote weight loss in the short term (6 months to 2 years). However, their safety has been questioned, especially by those researchers and nutritionists who have noted time and time again that the most healthful diets are the ones that promote a predominance of vegetables, fruit, whole grains, seeds, nuts, beans, legumes, and heart healthy fish. A study was published in The Lancet this year entitled, "Dietary carbohydrate intake and mortality: a prospective cohort study and meta-analysis." It reviewed the risk of dying based on percentages of carbohydrate intake. It turns out that your mortality risk increases both with low as well as high carb diets.
Yet here's the rub- your mortality rate from a low-carb diet depends on the source of protein and fat. Your risk of dying goes down if you are eating plant-based sources of protein and goes up (by up to 30%) if you are eating animal-based sources.
Remember that vegetables and fruits count as carbohydrates and that all plants have protein. So when you make your New Year's resolutions, resolve to live a long, healthy life. Minimize your processed and refined carbohydrates and maximize your whole food, plant-based nutrition. Thrive in 2019!
